September 5 is celebrated in India as “Teachers’ Day.” Teachers are felicitated and feted and fussed over, one day a year. Indians also celebrate Guru Purnima, which is also really Teachers’ Day–but now more likely, referring the person who is your spiritual guru or the person who teaches you the arts.
All over the world, teaching is praised in rhetoric and undervalued in material terms. Yet, people flock to this profession or if they find themselves teaching, grow devoted to the work.
What makes teaching an avocation rather than a mere profession?
What are the joys of teaching? On the other side, what are the heartbreaks?
