The Education for Peace Initiative at Prajnya

“Since wars begin in the minds of men,
it is there that we must construct the defences of peace.”
UNESCO Charter

“Establishing lasting peace is the work of education; all politics can do is keep us out of war.”
– Maria Montessori

Education for Peace Initiative (EPI) hosts Prajnya’s pedagogically-oriented projects. Its vision is to teach peace by fostering the learning of skills conducive to communication, healing, reconciliation and interaction between people with divergent interests and creating capacity for the resolution of conflict and the creation of a sustainable peace. A citizenry accepting of diversity and difference is a citizenry capable of building and sustaining peace.

Teaching Peace is the cornerstone project around which the Initiative’s activities are anchored. Under this project, we will train teachers to practice and model peace building, problem-solving and conflict resolution techniques to school-age children within the context of the existing curriculum.

Educational policy research is Prajnya’s way of nurturing a sustained engagement with educational issues and debates. We do not want our peace work to be isolated from other educational challenges. We would like to locate ourselves within a network of similar enterprises and to learn from them as we design our own programme.
